Sludge dewatering upgrade at an industrial WwTW

Client: Industrial wastewater operator (named on request under NDA)

Project Overview

An industrial wastewater treatment works was hitting rising sludge disposal costs due to poor cake dryness on an ageing belt press. Cake was leaving site at a moisture level that pushed the operator into a higher-cost disposal category, and polymer consumption was climbing as operators tried to compensate.

CLIENT CHALLENGE

The Challenge

  • Ageing belt press producing consistently under-target cake dryness.
  • Disposal cost per tonne rising as the site was pushed into a wetter waste category.
  • Polymer consumption drifting upward with no matching improvement in cake.
  • No local expertise on decanter operation for a plant historically built around belt presses.
ENGINEERING SOLUTION

Paragon's Approach

1

Bench trials on representative sludge, testing candidate polymer chemistries and shortlisting a decanter centrifuge sized against the actual duty rather than nameplate.

2

Supply and commissioning of the selected decanter centrifuge and a properly sized polymer make-up unit.

3

Polymer selection and dosing optimisation with the operator, moving from manual to automated dose control.

4

Operator training and a preventive-maintenance schedule built around the new equipment.

EQUIPMENT SUPPLIED

What Paragon Supplied

  • Decanter centrifuge with tungsten-carbide scroll protection
  • Polymer make-up unit with automatic dosing skid
  • Feed pump and inline static mixer
  • PLC and HMI upgrade for closed-loop dose control
RESULTS ACHIEVED

Outcomes

Cake dryness improvement moved the site into a lower disposal cost band.
Polymer consumption stabilised at a lower unit rate against the previous system.
Reduced site labour on manual dosing adjustments through automated control.
Preventive maintenance schedule adopted as standard, reducing unplanned downtime.
